Church Rocks Barnstead New Years Eve The Barnstead Church will begin its new life as a music venue on New Years Eve. New Years Eve marks the resurrection of Barnsteads St. Paul Catholic Church into a recently renovated live performance venue now known as simply, The Barnstead Church. Local recording artist and performer, Chris Bonoli and her Blues Monsters will light up the stage for a lively New Years celebration. For nearly a year, the little white church on Maple Street in Center Barnstead has been going through a major transformation. Slated for a bulldozer to make way for a parking lot, the church found a savior early last year in Seattle entertainment producer, Charlie Cantrell. Cantrell discovered the abandoned church while pumping gas across the street at the Country Store. He noticed the church had a closed sign on it and called his broker, Cheryl Favreau to inquire as to whether he could purchase it. At the time, Favreau was assisting Cantrell in purchasing commercial office buildings in the Lakes Region. The rest is history. Cantrell purchased the church that day with the intention of using it for a rehearsal studio, live performance venue and musical incubator for developing East Coast talent. After completing the purchase, Cantrell began the task of converting the church to a viable theater style venue while at the same time keeping the original style and grace of the old church. The church was stripped of old out dated wiring and rewired to accommodate the demands of sound systems, theatrical lighting, and video production. The church did not have a bathroom. A well was drilled and septic system installed. A bathroom was carefully added with architectural detailing in the same style. A three foot high stage was built to afford increased visibility and plenty of space for performers. Cantrell refers to his church as a pew venue in that he left the pews in place to maintain the authentic feeling of a church. He even left the confessional in one of the dressing rooms. After working and touring with international performing artists for many years, Cantrell sees his church as a precious musical gem where the pure joy of music can be shared. Having produced shows in some of the worlds most acclaimed venues, Cantrell knows a special musical space when he sees and hears one. The acoustics of the church remind him of his all time favorite venue, the Sydney Opera House. The church renovation was completed just in time for the Holidays. Cantrell began his search for the perfect artist to perform at the first concert. After considering such artists as Arlo Guthrie, Janis Ian, Marion Weston and other artists, some of whom Cantrell represents, he decided on Barnstead resident, Chris Bonoli and Her Blues Monsters. According to Cantrell Chris is the perfect artist to open up the church. She is a driving force in the Lakes Region music scene as well as an extraordinarily talented and gifted performer. Im honored to have her grace the stage New Years Eve to give birth to live music in Barnstead. Chris Bonoli lives her dream taking her electric blues and rock from traditionally inspired blues with a unique sound, to original songs of her own that are equally as powerful. Chris will be joined by Syd Brooks on base guitar, Marty Wintje on lead guitar, and Jim Mastromario on drums. Be one of the first to welcome in music and a New Year to the Barnstead Church as it opens its doors for the first time. This magical first performance will take place New Years Eve from 7:00-9:00 p.m. Cantrell sees the Barnstead Church as a gift of music not only to the community but to the many talented and local musicians who live and work in the area. When he purchased the church, he did so strictly as a philanthropic project. One hundred percent of all concert proceeds go to the artists who perform in the church. Even though he has reserved parking in front of his church for his shiny red Ferrari, according to Cantrell, The Barnstead Church is not about making money, it is about making music. Music is my religion. The church is my way of tithing to the Music Gods. General admission tickets are $10 and are available exclusively through the Barnstead Country Store Box Office located across from the church at 28 Maple Street, Center Barnstead. Box Office hours are seven days a week until 9pm. Advance ticket purchases are encouraged, as the concert is expected to sell out quickly. Doors will open at 6:30 PM. Christmas Eve Service At Barnstead Parade Congregational Church There will be a Christmas Eve Service at the Barnstead Congregational Church on Wednesday, December 24th at 7:00 p.m. All are welcomed, come and be blessed. Letter What a nice surprise it was when I came to the Dec. 17th edition Epsom page 10 and saw a picture of old friend Harvey Harkness and read a Letter to the Editor from another old friend, Gordon Ellis. Hello! The Sun is certainly helpful in highlighting the activities of the many citizens in the Suncook Valley. William A. Bill Johnson
Letter To All Storm Victims: Just curious if any of you took note that on Saturday, 12/13/08, that the price of gas at Blueberry Station, Route 28 was at High Test Price, no matter if you bought reg. or not. We all needed gas for generators and need not to be gouged in the middle of a very difficult time. Bell Brothers in Pittsfield didnt change. Oil goes down every day, yet the price jumped 6 cents a gallon on Wednesday, December 17, 2008, at Blueberry Station. Food for thought, isnt it? Name Withheld By Request
